BIOGRAPHY

Hi, my name is Ricardo Vasquez, representative for Los Astronautas and I would like to share a little history of our family.

Our father is Gilbert Vasquez Sr. and our mother Victoria Vasquez. They had a total of 14 children, 4 girls and 10 boys. Eight out of 10 boys became musicians.

Conjunto Los Astronautas was founded in 1963, by one of the older brothers. The band started as a garage combo band, just some friends getting together making music, just to pass the time, not knowing that their music would be part of their life. Members of the band at that time were Joe ”Pepe” Martinez, Victor Vitela, Joe Castanone, Gualupe “Pio” Vasquez, and Pat Salinas. Then later to join the band was another brother Raul Vasquez, who played drums for the band Guadalupe, played accordion. Then later two more brothers came to join the band, Rodolfo Vasquez who played bass, and Gilbert Vasquez who played Guitar. Later to join the band was Chris Aguirre who did harmony vocal with Lupe and also played accordion. The band manager was our father Gilbert Vasquez Sr., who gave the band the name Los Astronauts,

The idea came from when the first Astronauts who walked on the moon and also from a memory of my dad while he was working at Fort Sam Houston. My dad told a co-worker that he looked like an Astronaut with his thermos and lunch box to his side. So tossing names around for the band, he added conjunto in the beginning, which sounded pretty good, “Los Astronauts”. Then he added Spanish to the end, and that is where “Los Astronautas” came along. The band went on to record hits like Pretches-Pretches, Tu Prieto, El Hombre Es Hombre, Chug a Luv, Con Ojos Abiertos.
Tu Prieto was later recorded by Jimmy Edwards, who also had a hit with it. Los Astronautas traveled all-over the state of Texas, Michigan, Chicago, Alabama, Florida, California, and other states. Los Astronautas played side by side with bands such as, Los Relampagos del Norte, Augustine Ramirez, Freddy Martinez, Monsantos, Little Joe and The Latinaires, Joe Bravo, Sunny Ozuna, Toby Torres, Flaco Jimeniz, Los Pavo Reales, Tony De La Rosa, George Y Mague, Valerio Longoria Sr. and the list can go on.

On June 29, 1977, tragedy hit home when the lead vocalist of the band, our brother Guadalupe “Pio” Vasquez died in a car accident. It was a great loss for the music world of conjunto and for those who knew and admire his style of playing the accordion and also during his performance he would play the tones from his guitar, like Honky Tonk, Wooly Bully, Wipe Out, and oldie rotation, or should I say oldie medley. The band stop performing because my brothers found it very difficult to continue without Lupe on their side. As the years went on several other accordion players came, but there was still that piece missing, that piece that made Los Astronautas what they were. That special bond between musician brother for many years of playing together. Several years passed, and the younger brothers were already playing with other local bands. One day as we all came together at a family celebration, we all decided that we would leave the band we were playing with and give a family tradition a go. With the help and support of our parents, sisters, and brothers, we recorded 5 cassettes( CD’s weren’t out yet), with the help of Toby Torres Studio, who believed in us and had a lot of faith.

Presently we are signed with GSM DISCOS and we are realeasing an album on the summer of 2010 entitled "DAMELO" for mor information contact GSM DISCOS at www.gsmdiscos.com.

This band consist of 4 brothers, Rene Vasquez: Accordion, Rogelio Vasquez: Drums/vocals, Ruben Vasquez: Second vocalist, Ricardo Vasquez: Our sound engineer, Manuel Rendon, Bass, and James Muñoz

Everybody knew us because of our older brother and a lot of people who didn’t know us would ask if we were the same Vasquez from The Eastside. Then our friend Guero Polkas from KEDA radio station started calling us the Pride of the Eastside, and the name stuck with us ever since. Others would call us La Nueva Generacion ( The New Generation) not knowing we were the younger brothers, and not the nephews. Now after 43 years the name Los Astronautas , a family tradition, continues Los Hermanos Vasquez……….

Born and raised in the Eastside!!
